December 15: How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Dr. Seuss was a genius. I mean, this man created his own language, his own species, and made it a widespread phenomenon. “Da hoo dores" is not an actual phrase but if you sing it, people know where it’s from.
Fun fact: my cousins and I used to put on plays for the rest of my family (another tradition), and one Christmas we put on a production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. How we created an entire city of who-people, Cindy Lou, the Grinch, and Max the dog, with three girls, is a feat in and of itself. The lyrics to the songs are still scrawled on the whiteboard that’s stashed in my parents’ basement. (We rehearsed those lyrics a lot.) My family and I also used to watch this movie every year, so it has sentimental value for me on a few levels. Regardless of whether you’ve seen it one time or a hundred (and even maybe acted it outs yourself), the movie offers something that few do anymore: immerses us in a different world without the use of 3-D (ahem, Avatar) or intense commercialized marketing (Frozen is great, but an Olaf cupcake is a bit over-the-top).

Best quote: “And the Grinch himself cut the roast beast.”
